Elizabeth Nichols on Tough Love, Tulsa Sundays, and Finding Song Inspiration on the Road

Country singer-songwriter Elizabeth Nichols is quickly carving out her place in Nashville with honest storytelling, a faith-rooted foundation, and a sound that blends classic influences with modern country charm. From making her Grand Ole Opry debut to releasing fan-favorite songs that feel both playful and deeply personal like, Nichols’ journey is as heartfelt as the lyrics she writes.

2025 has been a breakout year for Nichols with the release of her debut EP, Tough Love. The seven-song project features her viral hit “I Got a New One,” which soared to No. 1 on the iTunes Country chart and No. 2 on the iTunes All Genre chart after receiving the Kellyoke treatment on The Kelly Clarkson Show. The cover—and Nichols’ heartfelt response—quickly captured the internet’s attention, cementing her as one of country music’s most exciting rising voices.

We recently caught up with Nichols as she opens up about the inspiration behind her latest song, the places that feel like home, and the destinations that continue to surprise her most. From Tulsa Sundays and Kentucky road trips to unexpected songwriting moments on tour, Nichols shares how travel, music, and meaningful moments continue to shape her path.

Your new song, “Oh, The Things Men Do,” is incredibly catchy and fun. What’s the craziest thing a man has ever said to you to get lucky?

Honestly, I feel like my favorite thing a man has ever said is, “I want to marry you.” I went to a really small Christian school where everyone was waiting for marriage, so it was always like, “Oh, well then let’s just get married.” And I was like, “Wait… I don’t think that’s exactly how that works.”

Have you ever written a song inspired by a place you’ve been—or a place you want to go?

Yes, for sure. I went to college in Oklahoma, and a lot of my family is from there—farms and all. Especially in my earlier music, there are a lot of influences from just driving around Tulsa. You wouldn’t think it’s the prettiest place, but there’s something really charming about it.

If someone was visiting Tulsa for the first time, what would your perfect day there look like?

My perfect day in Tulsa would be a Sunday. I’d start by going to my church, World Outreach Church. Their music is some of the best you’ll hear anywhere in the Midwest—big statement, but I stand by it. Then I’d go to Neighborhood Jam for breakfast, because it’s so good. After that, I’d probably drive over to ORU (Oral Roberts University), my alma mater, just to walk around campus and relive some memories. That’s my perfect Tulsa day.

A lot of artists discover music through church. Was that the case for you?

Absolutely. I learned how to sing at church, and I still sing at church. When I’m home in Louisville, Kentucky, my grandpa is a pastor and my dad is a pastor, and I sing every Sunday when I’m in town. It’s something I really love.

Speaking of Kentucky—what would you recommend for someone planning a road trip through the state?

I love the horse track—not just during Derby, but on any random race day. It’s so fun, and people don’t do that enough. Another favorite is Claudia Sanders’ restaurant outside Louisville in Shelbyville, Kentucky. It has the original KFC recipe, because when they sold the KFC brand, they didn’t sell the recipe. Fun fact: My grandpa actually baptized Colonel Sanders, so I have a personal connection there.

What’s currently on your tour bus playlist?

I’ve been listening to a lot of old Tamia—classic R&B. I’ve also been revisiting Olivia Rodrigo’s first album, which I love. I’ve been listening to LANY’s new album, and Trace Adkins has been a big favorite lately. It’s definitely a variety playlist.

You’ve toured a lot this year. Was there a city that surprised you in the best way?

Boston. We try to do hop-on, hop-off bus tours when we can in cities, and the Boston one was incredible. We learned about Paul Revere, and literally the next day I wrote a song called “Paul Revere.” That song isn’t out yet, but it’s one of my favorites.

You also made your Grand Ole Opry debut this year. What meant the most about that moment?

My entire family came. I don’t think there will ever be another moment where that many people I love are all in one room watching me perform. I had family from Oklahoma, Texas, Kentucky, Nashville—everyone came. That was the most meaningful part for me. It was such an honor.

What are your must-have travel items?

I am a horrible packer, but I absolutely need my travel steamer. If I forget clothes, I can survive—but not without my steamer. I also always pack a lot of sweatshirts because I’m always cold on the road. And lip gloss—always.

Looking ahead, what upcoming travels are you most excited about?

Australia, for sure. I lived in Melbourne for about eight months, and I can’t wait to go back, eat at my favorite spots, and see old places I love. I’m also really excited to explore Berlin and the Netherlands for the first time. I don’t even know what to expect, which makes it exciting.

Anything else you’re looking forward to in 2026?

Stagecoach. It’ll be my first time playing it, and I’m really excited—even if it’s dusty. It’s such an iconic festival, and I can’t wait to experience it.
