When planning a trip through British Columbia wine country, there are a handful of wineries that should be at the top of every wine lover’s itinerary. CheckMate Artisanal Winery in Oliver, British Columbia, is one of them. Known for producing some of the finest Chardonnay in Canada, CheckMate delivers an elevated Osoyoos wine tasting experience that combines award-winning wines, breathtaking vineyard views, and exceptional hospitality.

Nestled in the heart of the South Okanagan, just north of Osoyoos, CheckMate has built an international reputation for crafting ultra-premium, single-vineyard Chardonnay and Merlot. The winery was founded with a singular mission: to showcase the extraordinary potential of the Okanagan Valley through small-production wines that rival the world’s finest. Thanks to the region’s warm days, cool evenings, and mineral-rich soils, CheckMate consistently produces elegant wines with remarkable balance and complexity.

A Beautiful Wine Tasting Experience in British Columbia Wine Country
Our tasting took place inside CheckMate’s elegant dining room overlooking the vineyards. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed spectacular views of rolling vines, while the winery’s beautifully landscaped grounds—including fragrant lavender fields—created a peaceful atmosphere that encouraged guests to slow down and savor every sip.

The tasting highlighted exactly why CheckMate has become one of the best Okanagan wineries. Even for those who normally shy away from Chardonnay, these wines are likely to change your mind. Rather than the overly buttery, heavily oaked style many people associate with the varietal, CheckMate’s Chardonnays are refined, vibrant, and beautifully balanced. Each wine showcases bright fruit, crisp acidity, and subtle oak integration that allows the vineyard character to shine.

Standout Wines Worth Seeking Out
Our tasting featured four exceptional wines that demonstrated the diversity of CheckMate’s vineyards:
- 2022 Queen Taken Chardonnay (Dekleva-Combret Vineyard)
- 2022 Little Pawn Chardonnay (Jagged Rock Vineyard)
- 2022 Fool’s Mate Chardonnay (A blend of Dekleva-Combret, Sunset, Jagged Rock, and Border Vista vineyards)
- 2023 Black Rook Cabernet Franc (Vista’s Edge Vineyard)
Little Pawn Was One of Our Favorite Wines of 2026
While every wine impressed, Little Pawn Chardonnay quickly became one of our favorite wines of 2026.
Produced from fruit grown at the Jagged Rock Vineyard, Little Pawn offered incredible freshness, minerality, citrus notes, and a long, elegant finish. It was layered and complex without ever feeling heavy, proving why CheckMate’s Chardonnay program has earned acclaim from wine critics around the world. It was one of those rare wines that keeps evolving with every sip and is a bottle we would happily seek out again.

The Queen Taken Chardonnay showcased rich texture balanced by lively acidity, while Fool’s Mate beautifully demonstrated how blending multiple vineyard sites can create remarkable depth and complexity. To round out the tasting, the Black Rook Cabernet Franc displayed vibrant dark fruit, refined tannins, and subtle spice, showing that CheckMate’s winemaking expertise extends beyond Chardonnay.
