Spring Break Travel Warning Issued For Popular Mexico Destinations

The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico have released a travel advisory in anticipation of the upcoming bustling spring break tourist season. The advisory underscores various safety concerns in the country, emphasizing the risk of violent crime in well-frequented destinations like Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum. The State Department’s Travel Advisories for Mexico span from “do not travel” for locations such as Colima, Guerrero, and Michoacan to exercising normal precautions for Campeche and Yucatan.

Quintana Roo, home to Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum, is under the “exercise increased caution” areas due to crime. The State Department’s Travel Advisories for Mexico currently range from “do not travel” for places such as Colima, Guerrero and Michoacan to exercising normal precautions for Campeche and Yucatan.

“Crime, including violent crime, can occur anywhere in Mexico, including in popular tourist destinations. Travelers should maintain a high level of situational awareness, avoid areas where illicit activities occur, and promptly depart from potentially dangerous situations,” the official warning noted.

Tourists are cautioned that drug possession and use, including medical marijuana, is prohibited in Mexico. Additionally, they are advised to exercise caution regarding counterfeit pharmaceuticals and unregulated alcohol, which may pose contamination risks. The advisory also includes safety recommendations such as restricting the amount of cash carried, avoiding rip tides during swimming, and information about enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This program facilitates the reception of alerts, notifies individuals at home of travel plans, and streamlines locating individuals in case of emergencies.

It is recommended for travelers to remain in groups with friends when in clubs and bars, whether walking home or taking a taxi at night. Additionally, individuals should vigilantly monitor their credit or debit cards to promptly identify any unauthorized transactions.

As always we recommend traveling with caution to any international destination under a travel advisory.
