Dollywood officially closed for the 2024 Season on January 5, 2025 but preparations are already underway for the 40th anniversary celebration at one of America’s most beloved theme parks. Since its debut on May 3, 1986, Dollywood has evolved in many ways but remains steadfast in its mission to create a welcoming space for families to make cherished memories together.
Dollywood had an incredibly successful season in 2024 with the opening of the The Dolly Parton Experience, an interactive attraction that takes guests on a journey through Dolly Parton’s life, from her humble beginnings in Locust Ridge to her rise as a global icon, highlighting her career, family, dreams, and signature style. The park also premiered a new musical show called “From The Heart: The Life and Music of Dolly Parton,” which Dolly spoke about being the beginnings of her work on her Broadway musical.
Even though the park is currently closed, visitors can still visit Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa and Dollywood’s HeartSong Lodge & Resort. Dollywood HeartSong Lodge and Resort was named to National Geographic’s “Best of the World” list as well in 2024.
“I can’t believe we’ve been making memories at Dollywood for 40 years,” says Dolly Parton. “That’s a lot of laughter, hugs, and smiles, and I’m so proud to have been a part of it. My dream for Dollywood was always to give families a place to enjoy time together, and I’m grateful to everyone who has worked to make it what it is today, as well as the guests who’ve trusted us to help them create unforgettable moments.”
She recalls opening day with a smile, adding, “I spent that day watching the parking lot, worried no one would come. But look at how far we’ve come—and we’re just getting started!”
A Season of Celebrations
Dollywood’s 40th season will be packed with special events, starting with the Season Passholder Preview Day on March 14, 2025. The celebration continues with the I Will Always Love You Music Festival (March 15–April 13), which will include the return of From the Heart—The Life & Music of Dolly Parton. The show, held at Celebrity Theater, recounts Parton’s journey from her Sevier County roots to pursuing her dreams in Nashville. It will run through the Flower & Food Festival (April 18–June 8), showcasing over half-a-million blooms and Smoky Mountain-inspired dishes.
A new 40th Anniversary Show will debut Memorial Day weekend and run through summer, highlighting fan-favorite moments from the park’s entertainment history. The Smoky Mountain Summer Celebration (June 14–August 3), presented by Food City, will feature a dazzling drone and fireworks display, as well as a fresh opening ceremony each day.
The Imagination Playhouse will offer beloved plays inspired by Dolly’s Imagination Library books from March to September. During the summer, new storytime sessions and character meet-and-greets will join the lineup. Additionally, Heartsong: The Movie will be remastered for viewing in Dreamsong Theater as part of “The Dolly Parton Experience,” accompanied by “Heidi Parton’s Kin & Friends.”
Looking Ahead to a Transformed Park
Dollywood plans to refresh its Country Fair area in 2025. This section will transform into Candy Corn Country during the Harvest Festival and Peppermint Valley during Smoky Mountain Christmas, concluding the anniversary year with six million lights and festive holiday shows.
“We’re thrilled to celebrate 40 incredible seasons with our guests,” says Eugene Naughton, President of Dollywood Parks & Resorts. “We’ve worked hard to make Dollywood the best theme park experience in the country, and the awards we’ve received, including Tripadvisor’s #1 U.S. Theme Park, show we’ve succeeded. But as Dolly always says, ‘We’re just getting started!’”
Whether it’s enjoying a slice of king cake, reliving Dolly’s journey, or marveling at six million holiday lights, Dollywood’s 40th season promises something magical for everyone.
