The Dewberry: A Luxurious Blend of Mid-Century Charm and Southern Hospitality in Charleston

On our most recent stop in Charleston, South Carolina, we booked our stay at The Dewberry, a luxury hotel located right off of Marion Square. The hotel is the perfect place to spend time during the holidays. The property inhabits the historic landmark of the L. Mendel Rivers Federal Building built in 1964. When purchased by John Dewberry, a successful Georgia Tech football player and entrepreneur, the property was redesigned as his vision of “Southern Reimagined.” With its mid-century looks and strong sense of Southern charm, The Dewberry is the result of a thoughtfully imagined mix of the past and the present that redefines historic preservation.

In each of the 154 guest rooms and suites there are custom designed Stickley armoires, Dewberry’s signature botanical patterns, bathrooms of Danby, Vermont marble, mattresses imported from Ireland, and in-room minibars curated by the chef. The Dewberry offers 8 different styles of guest rooms and suites, each built to suit the needs of travelers.

The hotel has many amenities for guests to take full advantage of. When exploring the surrounding city of Charleston, be sure to use the hotel’s complementary Volvo’s to select locations or hop on a complimentary bike. Dedicated to the health and wellness of its guests, The Dewberry has a fitness center that is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily that features top-of-the-line exercise equipment, including Peloton bikes. You can also visit The Dewberry Spa, open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, providing spa treatments curated by renowned spa expert Lydia Mondavi.

During our stay, we stopped at the spa and spent a few hours relaxing. I got The Dewberry Signature Facial, a 60-minute massage and treatment of Vitamin C and other beneficial antioxidant exfoliants and creams. We also got the Swedish Massage, a 60 or 90 minute hydrating massage combined with essential oils. The spa treatments were the perfect way to relax during a frantic holiday season.

The hotel has two different in-house dining options, The Living Room and Citrus Club. The Living Room, designed after a homey mid-century Charleston living room, offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as coffee and alcohol. From carefully crafted breakfast bowls, to burgers and fries, It’s the perfect location to grab a quick bite or to sit down and have a nice meal.

Citrus Club, the hotel’s roof-top cocktail bar, and highest rooftop in Charleston, features citrus-inspired cocktails and some small bites to eat. They have 17 different types of wine to choose from, 13 cocktails, and even zero proof drinks. Their menu has ocean inspired dishes like the Caribbean Rice Bowl, or the Crispy Pina Colada Shrimp, which you can finish off with a slice of Luau Pie. Overall, The Dewberry offers a fantastic “Southern Reimagined” experience, making sure guests have anything they could need. It is truly a great place to stay and explore Charleston.
