Friday brought perfect Mardi Gras parade weather and the streets were lined with tens of thousands of parade spectators waiting for the first big parades of the season. Ladders were out so children could get the best views and beads could be caught all along Napoleon and St. Charles.

Established in 1996, the Krewe of Oshun takes its name from the Yoruba goddess of love and intimacy. Guided by the captain aboard a peacock-themed float, the parade showcases 17 floats designed by Barry Barth, various participating bands engaged in a competition, and marching Baby Dolls. Notable throws include peacock figures and mugs, and Oshun’s king is known as “Shango.” Their signature throw is handmade fans.
