Overview Effect

Everyone who entered the grounds of Coachella 2019 was happy to see the return of the Giant Astronaut that is in so many iconic Coachella photographs. 

Patrick Shearn, creative director of Los Angeles production studio Poetic Kinetics always seeks to create exhilarating experiencesThe studio returned last year to Coachella for the seventh time with an updated version of a 57-foot-long astronaut that it debuted in 2014. Now titled Overview Effect, the sculpture was inspired by the cognitive shift some astronauts experience upon entering outer space and seeing Earth for the first time.

The exhibit was remote controlled by a team that followed and guided it all throughout the festival grounds both weekends of the festival. It was also fun to see the astronaut evolve over the two weekends. By Weekend 2 at the festival, the space man had tons of festival passes on its wrist, an all access lanyard and confetti on its helmet. By the end of the festival it even had a Hippo it had “accidentally” stepped on under its space boot. Overview Effect became a required stop for everyone to try to get the perfect selfie with the astronaut.
