Pick for Best of National Ice Cream Month: Graeter’s Ice Cream

It’s National Ice Cream month and in our humble opinion, there is no competition. Graeter’s ice cream is the winner every single time.

I’m not going to say I moved to Cincinnati just for Graeter’s ice cream 20 years ago but it was a big factor in my decision after sitting in Hyde Park Square eating the famous ice cream every time I visited.

The ice cream chain started on the streets of Cincinnati in 1870 when Louis Charles Graeter began selling ice cream. He successfully sold the treat out of two carts after hand-crafting it in French Pots.

The business continues to be family owned and operated and also continues to produce in French pots in small batches that maintain the quality of the products.

Graeter’s was a bit of a Cincinnati secret until 2002 when Oprah Winfrey declared it the “absolutely the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted.”

If you are in the Cincinnati area, I highly recommend a stop for the ice cream to try seasonal favorites like Peach and Key Lime Pie in July. Popular traditional flavors include Black Raspberry Chip with chucks of chocolate.

Graeter’s is also active in community activities in the Cincinnati area. On Sunday, July 31, the ice cream company will partner with the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden for Fiona’s Sundae Fundae. Fiona is one of the most famous hippos in the world with a personality all her own as one of the Zoo’s biggest attractions.

Fiona’s Sundae Fundae will take visitors around the zoo for an ice cream sampling where you will be able to see some of your favorite animal habitats after normal hours. Upon arrival, guests will receive a Graeter’s ice cream passport to guide the way to the six sampling stations around the park.

Graeter’s ice cream can be purchased at their stores in the tri-state area of Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Indiana. The pints are also sold at local Kroger grocery chains in the area. The company also ships nationwide for anyone wanting to try the sweet treat.

The price for a 6-pint cooler is $79.95 or $119.95 for a 12-pint order which can be ordered here.
