United Adds New AI-Powered Features to App

United Airlines recently updated its mobile app to include more features that will save its customers time and enhance their travels. On the day they fly, over 84% of United customers use the app for real-time updates and transparent communication from the airline. Now, the industry’s best mobile app includes AI-supported navigation tools that will help cater features to individual traveler’s needs.

“The more information our customers have, the more confident they feel about their trip – and that’s particularly important during the holidays,” said David Kinzelman, United’s Chief Customer Officer. “The United app gives travelers personalized, real-time updates during their entire travel journey, helping our customers feel like they have a personal assistant guiding them every step of the way.”

App Enhancements

New features on the United app include:

  • ‘Virtual Gate’: gives customers real-time updates about boarding groups, including a progress bar showing how many people have boarded
  • United Club ‘closest and best’ feature: recommends nearby United Club locations based on proximity to gates and the club’s available capacity
  • Upgraded bag tracking: a package-delivery-style tracker showing where bags are in real-time
  • Personalized updates: from guidance on strollers/wheelchairs, to reminders about necessary travel documents and even biometric boarding options
  • Arrival information: shows travelers live local weather, estimated arrival time and rideshare information from the airport to streamline travel to their next destination

United’s enhancements to its app are part of what’s helped the airline lead the industry. Previously, United had launched:

  • Personalized app features to simplify catching connecting flights, including detailed directions with estimated walk times, real-time flight status, tips for lengthy layovers and a heads-up if United could hold the plan for those with tight connections.
  • Integrated Apple Share Item Location, allowing customers utilizing AirTags or the Find My network to share their accessory with United’s customer service team to help track down mishandled luggage.
  • Automatic rebooking assistance that allows customers to rebook themselves, track baggage and even arrange meal/hotel vouchers when flights are delayed or cancelled.
  • Real-time specific weather delay communication via text that shares radar maps to show how inclement weather impacts flight patterns (unique to United Airlines)
