Celebrate Buddy Holly’s 90th Birthday in Lubbock, Texas This Weekend

Lubbock, Texas, is known as the birthplace of one of rock and roll’s most influential pioneers: Buddy Holly. Born Charles Hardin Holley in Lubbock in 1936, Holly helped shape the sound and spirit of early rock and roll with his distinctive vocals, innovative songwriting and groundbreaking approach to performing. Although his career lasted only a few years, his influence reached far beyond West Texas, inspiring generations of musicians and helping lay the foundation for the British Invasion and modern rock music. This Labor Day weekend, Lubbock will celebrate the legendary musician’s 90th birthday with a free day of music, history and family fun at the Buddy Holly Center.

The Buddy Holly Center invites the community and visitors to join the Buddy Holly 90th Birthday Bash on Monday, September 7, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The free celebration offers something for music fans of all ages and is a chance to honor the legacy of a hometown legend whose music continues to resonate nearly seven decades after his untimely death.

The day’s activities will include opportunities to explore Buddy Holly’s life and the musical history of Lubbock. Visitors can tour the historic J.I. Allison House, which will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Allison was the drummer for Holly’s early band, The Crickets, making the home an important part of the story behind Lubbock’s musical legacy.

Test your knowledge during the Buddy Holly trivia challenge, offered at 11 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. History and music fans can also join a guided gallery tour at 1:30 p.m. for a closer look at Holly’s life, career and enduring influence.

Live music will take center stage at 2:30 p.m., when Dustin Garrett and Shae Arnett perform during the birthday celebration. Their performance will provide the perfect soundtrack for a day dedicated to one of rock and roll’s original trailblazers.

Families are also invited to enjoy children’s activities throughout the day, along with sweet treats and giveaways. Light refreshments will be available during the afternoon, adding to the festive atmosphere.
