MISMO

Some take for granted that Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival really does have a lot of amazing art installations. We want to highlight some of the large scale exhibits that were on display in 2019.

Artist Sofia Enriquez has carved an art and fashion career for herself in Coachella Valley, her hometown, painting murals and launching her own clothing line, Mucho. She created her first public mural for Coachella’s camping grounds in 2015 at age 22, after working for the festival and attending it since high school, but her new series at Coachella 2019 called MISMO, marked an important turning point for her career with large installation work.

MISMO is a garden of six wooden paisleys, each with its own color scheme and lighting symbolizing equality. She has stated that the idea was to choose a shape that cuts across cultures, ages and socioeconomic groups — from farm workers’ bandannas to silk ties, from things her grandmother stitches to the slinky tops young women wear to the fest.

This photograph from last year struck me with the vibrant colors of the mural that glowed in the desert sun.
