Everything You Need for the Ultimate Mardi Gras Parade Experience

Mardi Gras is the happiest time of year in New Orleans and we are right in the middle of Deep Gras. Deep Gras is the time between Noon on the Wednesday before Mardi Gras and Midnight on Ash Wednesday when all the festivities conclude. One of the most popular things to do during Mardi Gras is attend the lavish parades that roll from Uptown New Orleans and all over the region.

If you’re heading to New Orleans to watch Mardi Gras parades, here’s a list of must-have items to bring for the best experience:

Essentials:

Comfortable Shoes – You’ll be walking and standing for hours. Opt for sneakers or boots.
Layered Clothing – Weather can be unpredictable. Bring a light jacket or rain poncho.
Backpack or Tote Bag – To carry your essentials and all the beads and throws you catch.

Parade Must-Haves:

Costume or Festive Attire – Dress up in Mardi Gras colors (purple, green, and gold) or fun costumes.
Throw Bags – Extra bags for collecting beads, plush toys, and other parade throws.
Ladder (if with kids) – Families often bring decorated ladders with seats for kids to have a better view.

Comfort & Convenience:

Folding Chair – If you plan to camp out for a good parade spot.
Sunscreen & Sunglasses – Daytime parades can be sunny.
Rain Poncho or Umbrella – Just in case of rain; the show goes on!

Fanny Pack– To hold your small valuables.
Reusable Water Bottle – Stay hydrated while partying.
Snacks – Street food is sometimes available, but lines can be long. Granola bars are a great option.

Koozies– To keep your beverages cold

Safety & Practical Items:

Portable Phone Charger – Your battery will drain fast from taking photos and videos.
Printed Parade Schedule – Cell service can be spotty.

Parade Tracker App- We recommend the WDSU Parade Tracker to see exact locations of the parade compared to your location.
ID & Cash – Some vendors are cash-only, and you’ll need ID for bars. Bring small bills.
Hand Sanitizer & Tissues – Public restrooms and porta-potties can run out of supplies.

First Aid:

Band-aids– For minor cuts and scrapes

Tylenol– For minor headaches
