Breaking Ground: The Okanagan Gondola Begins Construction Above Kalamalka Lake

Construction is officially underway on one of British Columbia’s most anticipated new attractions. Ridge North America has broken ground on the Okanagan Gondola, a major tourism development rising in the hills above Kalamalka Lake, perfectly positioned between Kelowna and Vernon in the heart of the Okanagan Valley.

A groundbreaking ceremony held on July 10, 2025 marked the beginning of construction at both the summit station and base area. Representatives from the Regional District of North Okanagan, project investors, community members, and the Ridge North America team gathered to celebrate the start of a project designed to blend adventure, scenery, and connection to place.

When complete, the Okanagan Gondola promises sweeping panoramic views of the valley, immersive walking trails, and elevated dining experiences—all created with visitors of every age in mind. The vision goes beyond transportation to the top; it’s about creating a destination where people can slow down, explore, and take in the natural beauty that defines the region.

“This is an exciting milestone for our team and our partners,” said Rupert Harper, General Manager of Okanagan Gondola. “Okanagan Gondola is a place where breathtaking views, immersive trails, and elevated dining come together in one unforgettable experience. Designed for all ages, it invites exploration, connection, and moments of joy in the heart of the valley. Every detail reflects the spirit of the Okanagan—welcoming, adventurous, and naturally inspiring.”

Thoughtful design is central to the project. The gondola’s architecture emphasizes natural materials and low-profile structures intended to complement the surrounding landscape rather than compete with it. From a distance, buildings are designed to blend into the hillsides, allowing the scenery to remain the star of the experience.

Developed by Ridge North America, the Okanagan Gondola joins a portfolio of attractions, hospitality projects, and residential developments across growing tourism regions. The company focuses on creating outdoor experiences that support local economies through employment opportunities, community investment, and long-term sustainability.

“The project has the unique characteristic of creating something truly special for both residents and visitors,” said David McKenna, President of Ridge North America. “It’s rewarding to be part of something that connects people to the outdoors in such a meaningful way.”

Once open, the Okanagan Gondola is expected to complement Vernon’s existing tourism offerings while strengthening the region’s appeal as a destination for outdoor adventure, cultural experiences, and scenic exploration. For travelers seeking a fresh way to experience the Okanagan Valley, this new attraction is poised to become a must-visit.
