A Kaleidoscope of Sound and Light: Inside Regensburg’s Immersive ‘Enlightenment’ Show

During our visit to Germany, we found a special show being performed at the former Minorite Church of St. Salvator (Minoritenkirche). The 45-minute immersive show called Enlightenment took place in Regensburg in the Dachauplatz district. Blending together sound and trippy visuals, the great domed ceiling of the former church was transformed by light projections. The audiovisual production was put on by Projektil and More Than Classic.

The hundreds of years old Minorite Church was founded in 1221 by the Bishop of Regensburg, Konrad IV of Frontenhausen, Count Otto VIII of Bavaria, and King Henry VII. At the time, the structure was considered the largest church of the order in southern Germany until it closed down in 1799. The building has survived many years and was reused for the Bavarian Army, a customs hall, a drill hall, and a hotel until it became the Regensburg Museum of History in 1931.

The group of nine artists and technologists, Projektil, came together to create new ways of storytelling and expression with their colorful projections. Projektil’s passion is to blend visual art, music, and technology to create memorable and impactful art pieces. The artist collective partnered with More Than Classic, a Zurich, Switzerland based non-profit organization that reimagines classical music performances by providing innovative unconventional concert experiences to viewers.

The immersive show paid homage to the four seasons through the classical sounds of the Italian composer, Vivaldi. More Than Classic’s violinist Irina Pak and accordion player Ilya Kurtev harmonized together to create an audiovisual experience paired with the mesmerizing images from Projektil. Bean bags were spread across the floor so guests could get comfortable and enjoy the images projected onto the ceiling.

Incredible moving imagery of flowers, geometric patterns, shifting shapes, and beams of light brought life to the tall church hall. The music paired perfectly with the kaleidoscopic images that cascaded across the ceiling and down the walls, engulfing the room in colors and visuals. It was so relaxing to just lay down and take in all the sounds and images that told a story along to the Vivaldi music.
