United Airlines Will Halt Flights From JFK; Unveils 2023 Summer Schedule

In the same week, United Airlines announced more international flights to Europe and Dubai for Summer 2023 but would pause service at John F. Kennedy (JFK) in New York City this month.

By the end of October United stated it will (temporarily) cease flights in and out of one of the world’s busiest airports (and the sixth largest globally). There is no timeline of when the airline might resume service to and from JFK.

“Given our current, too-small-to-be-competitive schedule out of JFK — coupled with the start of the Winter season where more airlines will operate their slots as they resume JFK flying — United has made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend service at JFK,” stated a memo by United to employees according to Reuters.

Additionally, United has revealed a plan for more international flights in 2023, on the heels of a busy summer travel season. There will be new service to Malaga, Spain; Stockholm, Sweden; and Dubai, UAE.

“United saw historic levels of demand for travel to Europe in the summer peak, up 20% compared to 2019, and is focused on developing its network to serve continued demand strength,” according to the company’s press release. United also stated they expect another busy Summer in 2023 for flying.

There will be six more flights to Europe, including Rome, Italy; Paris, France; Barcelona, Spain; London, England; Berlin, Germany and Shannon, Ireland. Overall, the airline will fly to 37 cities in Europe, Africa, India and the Middle East next summer.

“Next summer United is offering the best of both worlds: we’re making it easier for our customers to visit the most popular cities in Europe, but we’re also expanding our reach to give travelers access to new places they haven’t yet experienced,” said Patrick Quayle, senior vice president of global network planning and alliances at United stated in the release.
