Inside Porto’s Bakery: The Family Legacy Behind California’s Sweetest Success

If you’re looking for some of the best quality Cuban pastries, Porto’s Bakery & Cafe in California is a one stop shop for all your savory and sweet needs. Porto’s has come a long way, beginning as an in-home business, to a small shop on Sunset Boulevard in 1976, and now growing to six locations across California. Porto’s can be found in Glendale, Burbank, Downey, Buena Park, West Covina, Northridge, and the Downtown Disney® District. We had a tour of the Buena Park location with Larissa from marketing who told us all we needed to know about Porto’s.

Rosa Porto is the heart and soul behind Porto’s Bakery. As a child, Rosa grew up in Cuba around her mother making delicious baked goods and was handed down her recipes. Rosa enjoyed sharing her cooking and baking with others and prided herself on using ingredients from their places of origin – like ube from the Philippines and matcha from Japan. Rosa’s motto was “quality is the number one ingredient in everything we do.”

After leaving Cuba and coming to America, Rosa and her husband, Raul Sr. made a living selling baked goods out of their home. They did not have much but made the most out of their situation, eventually creating Porto’s Bakery. Rosa’s three children, Beatriz, Raul Jr., and Margarita joined in on the family business, helping their mom bake during their free time. Growing up as their mom’s baking helper ignited a passion in them to carry on their mother’s legacy after her passing in 2019. Now, Rosa’s three children and grandchildren carry on Portos’ family tradition.

Porto’s has won countless awards over the years including Yelp’s “Top 100 Places to Eat in the US” (2016), Los Angeles Times’ “Best Bakery” (2022), and “Small Business of the Year” (2025). Clearly, Rosa’s recipes have reached far and wide and are loved by many. Not only is Porto’s dedicated to their patrons, they also extend their service to community partners, like churches and food banks, where they donate all of their leftover baked goods every day.

Due to its popularity, Rosa’s family created Porto’s Bake at Home in 2018, a shipping service to bring Porto’s baked goods right to your door. The online shopping and shipping service sends out frozen cakes and pastries as well as signature savory Cheese Rolls®, Refugiados®, and Potato Balls®. The tasty goods can be shipped around the world.

Each Porto’s Bakery & Cafe location is open from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., serving up fresh baked goods and Cuban cafe delights daily. Stop in at a location near you and treat yourself to some of the finest baked goods in California at the most reasonable prices around.
