888, A Japanese Cuisine + Listening Lounge, To Open in Nashville

888, which derives its name from the Japanese slang usage of 8 as applause, will come to Nashville this September. The concept delivers a refined fusion of Japanese cuisine and curated music to serve a high-fidelity experience for its guests. The restaurant will open at 800 Clark Place, at the corner of 8th Avenue South.

“As the appetite for experiential dining grows, 888 emerges as a beacon for those seeking an unparalleled fusion of exceptional cuisine and curated music,” said Philip Stewart, the concept’s general manager. “888 is a haven where culinary mastery converges with musical artistry. We’ve created a sensational culinary and musical odyssey for our guests that will intrigue both foodies and music-lovers alike.”

Audio Experience

888 offers an intimate, communal dining experience for its guests where music is the main course. The acoustics and sound system were crafted by Steven Durr Designs, Soundlux Audio and Devon Turnbull. The heart of 888’s setup is OJAS’ crafted horn-loaded speakers, which are based on vintage Altec Lansing designs. Expert musicians consider those speakers to be the “most musical speakers” ever created. They are used in Public Records in NYC and Supreme Stores, in addition to private homes of well-known record producers. At 888, a handmade sound system of brutalist speakers, a turntable and a series of amplifiers will deliver the auditory experience guests expect.

Design

For its interior design, Los Angeles-based design studio Commune was inspired by the Jazz kissas that co-founder Roman Alonso visited while working in Japan. Jazz kissas are cafes that were built to appreciate jazz music and provide guests somewhere to sit and listen to it for hours. In Nashville, the restaurant has a limited seating capacity of 100 between its sushi bar, private dining room and central cocktail island.

Food + Drink

The food menu includes nigiri, maki, cured salmon onigiri, donabe fried rice and hot karaage. Sushi Chef Deden “Benny the Blade” Bandi will lead the sushi bar program. During his 20+ years perfecting the art of sushi, Benny has worked with Chef Nobu Matsuhisa of Nobu, as well as serving as private chef for Mick Jagger, Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz. 888’s beverage service will feature a wide variety of Japanese products. It includes craft beers, rare whiskies and a curated sake program.
